How did each class take Action in Spring 2019?
Year 2 studied Robin Hood throughout the Spring term. Alongside the historical learning they considered elements of PSHE including charitable giving. Both Year 2 classes looked at the views of the major religions on charitable giving. Both classes visited a Sikh Gurudwara to learn about Langar - the Community Kitchen, open to anyone and everyone.
Mango class decided to open their own community kitchen in the playground. They made posters and decorated biscuits which they gave away to anyone who wanted one.
Oak class brainstormed ideas for ways they could also give to others. The children decided they would like to support a local food bank to ensure all local families can have food if needed. The children wrote letters asking for donations, collected the donations, and hand delivered them to local food bank Hope House in Beeston.

Year 3's topic was Dragons vs Vikings and they studied the historical and geographical aspects of Viking Invasion. Bringing their learning to the here and now, children learnt about migration of people in recent times, including forced migration of refugees. The children watched clips on the BBC to help them understand more about refugees and to hear fist hand accounts from refugees. They then researched charities that help refugees. They chose to look most closely at the charity Help Refugees and to find out more about their work and how they could get involved. They used the information and understanding they had gained to write persuasive letters and posters asking for donation items for the refugees in Calais. Children sorted the donations ready to be shipped to Calais through Help Refugees Charity.
Year 5 carried out a local history study of the role that Wollaton Hall played in World War 2 - Wollaton at war. Later in the term, Year 5s considered how to give back to their local community. For Cedar class' action project they researched various local charities in small groups and then presented the charities to the class. The class then had to vote for which charity they would like to support. They voted for Framework. The children then decided how they were going to raise money for the charity and after brainstorming a variety of ideas came up with the idea of carnival games. The children then designed and created their own games. They held the carnival on the last Friday of the term and invited the whole campus to attend at allotted times. All the game were 20p to play. Cedar class raised £91.40 for Framework. Beech class is planning a football fundraiser to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Research. The children are very to excited to host a football match between the teachers and the year 5's. Through their research into this charity, the children are learning about giving back to their community.
