Link classes Tiina Weckström and Marie Gallagher: Refugees and racism
Year 5 pupils in Rastaala had started their project work on refugees and racism by reading newspaper articles and watching a Finnish documentary, Pitkin tietä pieni lapsi, whose theme is friendship between native Finnish and Somali-born children.
After that we talked about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and made a list of things that we would like to take with us if we had to leave our homes. Pupils were allowed to choose 10 things but had to cut the list down to 5 and then agree with a friend on that list. Finally we wrote those things on the board and discussed what we had chosen and why. We did the same exercise in Dunkirk and in addition to that, did also freeze frames: imagine that you are leaving your country, how do you feel? Imagine you arrive at your destination and the community doesn't want you there, what are you thoughts now? Finally, the community welcomes you - how does that make you feel?
