What makes us happy, what worries us?
We (Finnish teachers) visited Dunkirk classes. Pupils asked us questions considering finnish school and habits. We tried our best to answer. With year 5, we worked with two big questions: Which things in the world make us happy? Which are the things we are worried about? Finnish 5. class had done the same thing earlier and we started the lesson watching photos of Finnish pupils telling their thoughts. We were interested if there would be strong similarities between English and Finnish pupils. Many pupils told that their families and dear friends are the things which make them feel happy. Also pets and hobbies were mentioned many times. Education possibilities were seen very positive in both countries. Peace and safety were seen good things in Finland.
In both classes children found war a thing to worry. Pupils at Nottingham also told that terrorism worries them the much. Finnish pupils were worried about diseases and life expectations in poor countries. Pollution and nature destruction were seen very bad things among both classes.
10-11 year old pupils watch the news, read papers, search the internet and discuss with elders. They are very awake. They know some history, some politics, some frightening things in media, enough to become aware that future is not necessarily bright. Let´s use our voice. Let´s make things better for tomorrow.
